Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering
ITU Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department is located in ITU Maritime Faculty, which was established in Tuzla in 1992. The Faculty continues its education and training activities with its 400 m coast to the Marmara Sea and a total of 70,000 m2 residential area.
The education of the department is given in uniform, with the exception of the Undergraduate Preparatory Class at ITU Maçka Campus. In the curriculum, in addition to the basic engineering courses, there are compulsory and elective courses in Shipping, Navigation, Maritime English, Cargo Handling, Maritime Meteorology, Maritime Law, Basic Swimming Skills, Safety of Life at Sea etc. About the open sea education (training period), students must complete 12 months. Generally, at the end of the 1st and 2nd years, the students meet the maritime profession by doing 3-month short trainings on ships and then they complete the 6-month open sea training in the 2nd semester of the 3rd year.
Candidate students can also choose the SUNY paid-program, which is conducted with the UOLP, apart from the ITU Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering department where regular education is provided. SUNY program students are educated 1.5 years at the State University of New York Maritime College (SUNYMC), one of the most established academic institutions in United States. UOLP graduates receive dual diplomas and can pursue careers by reaching high business conditions with their worldwide diplomas. UOLP students receive offshore training aboard the SUNYMC Training Ship during the 1st and 2nd year summer terms. 3rd and 4th grades are completed at ITU Maritime Faculty in Tuzla. Just like the students in the regular department, SUNY program students complete the 12-month training period which is required for graduation. In addition, graduates may work as general manager, business manager, technical manager, safety inspector in maritime companies. After a certain maritime experience, they can also work as maritime pilots in the Turkish Straits Region and Turkish ports.
